A couple happenings: FLS grading seminar and C&C Online interview
I wanted to share two things with you.
First, I wanted to let you know about an upcoming Magna Online Seminar I am facilitating, "Five Ways to Build e-Learner Confidence with Low-Stakes Grading." This one-hour live seminar, which takes place on Wednesday, April 25 from noon to 1 pm Central Time, is about what I'm calling frequent, low-stakes grading (FLS grading). I focus on the idea that using lots of low-stakes grades, especially in online courses, can help teachers communicate with their students more effectively while helping these students develop better learner confidence. More background about this live seminar as well as registration information can be found here.
Also, Computers and Composition Online recently published a video interview I took part in with USC's Geoffrey Middlebrook about my book Teaching Writing Online: How and Why. In the interview, Middlebrook and I discuss the book using the "analytical instrument" of the Sloan Consortium's Five Pillars of Quality Online Education: learning effectiveness; scale (cost effectiveness and commitment); access; faculty satisfaction; and student satisfaction. I enjoyed our five-part conversation, as I found the Sloan Pillars to be a great vehicle for re-visiting the original arguments and concepts I tried to advance in the book about OWI.
